Long-term Influence:
Long-term Club membership makes a difference. In a 2007 national study conducted by Harris Interactive and Boys & Girls Clubs of America, alumni of Boys & Girls Clubs report the Clubs had a significant positive impact on their lives.
Over time, Club members generally show steady improvement in the areas of self-esteem, communication, and conflict-resolution skills. Some of the key findings include: - 28% of alumni say they would have dropped out of high school if not for Boys & Girls Clubs.
- 51% of those surveyed achieved a higher level of education than they thought possible because of their Club.
- 90% say the Club was one of the best things available in their community and most (60%) said it was the only place to go after school.
- Club staff had a positive effect on alumni knowing right from wrong (85%), learning positive leadership skills (77%), and avoiding difficulty with the law (67%.)
- 57% of alumni surveyed feel their Club saved their life.
- 26% of Boys & Girls Clubs alumni earned a four-year college degree. This rate is equal to the national average, a remarkable achievement since many Club members come from disadvantaged circumstances.
